Work at home trends are changing, and actually employment trends in general are as well. For one, certain segments of society worked less in 1990 than they did two decades before.

For one, women who didn’t work outside the home reaped 6 to 10 extra hours of leisure. The gain in leisure was a minuscule few minutes a week for employed men. However, this was a change nonetheless.

Part of the reasons for the shift is because of labor-saving appliances and other aids that have lessened time it takes to complete household chores. This as well as no need to commute makes a huge difference.

The opposite seems to be true as well. Many women who used to stay at home and now hold jobs often experience an increase in workload by about 13 hours a week. The Inflexible usually worked while a woman is in the labor market typically requires them to put in a full week-often the same time every day.

This leaves household chores undone. At the end of each day the woman (or the man) has to come home and do them. Nevertheless, women with jobs spend less time on housework than their counterparts did 20 years ago.

Part of this is because they are usually now compensated with much higher incomes. This leads them to be able to afford to pay someone to help them with domestic chores.

Living Standards

An interesting question has been asked. Some experts and consumers wonder if having more free time translates into higher living standards. Some studies indicate the possibility.

One clue about living standards of people who work at home is present in government and trade group statistics. These documents do indicate Americans are spending more time and more money on recreation. Some of the numbers calculated are a bit old, but important to analyze nonetheless.

From 1970 to 1991, the number of Americans who play golf regularly doubled. By the early 190s a total of 11% of the population now enjoyed this past time. Similar results are indicated by records of numbers of adult joining softball teams.

The number of people participating in this sport jumped six-fold in two decades. Other statistics also show some answers. In 1970, a quarter of Americans bowled but more recently about a third of the population does.

An increase in the past few decades in the number of recreational boats and pleasure trips was also noted. The same is true for average baseball game attendance.

Of course, this may not necessarily account for recession years. However, overall over the past 30 to 40 years have been generally more prosperous for people. Some of these people work at home and enjoy more leisure time.

There are many indicators that a person would be an ideal work at home candidate. If you are considering this way of life you may want to seek further information.

The easiest way to describe someone who may be qualified to work at home is to give a list of attributes:

The one who works at home is one who is highly motivated and disciplined. This individual usually can work well with very little supervision.

A person who works at home has the ambition and organizational skills to see projects through to complete.

A person who pursues this kind of career is more than likely one who is a dreamer. This is a person who has a mission to help others in a way they cannot for another employer.

The right candidate undertaking this kind of venture is one who is very responsible. They pay their taxes and they pay their bills and they work hard to improve their situation.

The ideal person for this kind of vocation is one who is not going to give up easily.

A person who is able to balance work time and family time can handle this kind of work.
Anyone who has a passion or talent that can generate an income or multiple streams of income can succeed in this way.

Philosophies

People who work at home are doing more than just escaping the yoke of their current employment master. They have a deeper and more meaningful reason to make a life-altering decision that takes them away from the security of their present job.

These are the people who usually say that health, happiness and prosperity ultimately depend on the freedom to work for themselves. They also thrive on the ability to do so in the comfort of their own home.

Some Inspiration

If you are a person who truly wants to be successful at quitting your day job there is absolutely no room for compromise within you. There is no time to slack off and no time to give up.

To be as successful as you want to be in a work-at-home situation, it is said that you should be nothing less than a fanatic. This may be a bit of an exaggeration as you do still need to make time for family, friends, and fun.

However, the main point is that you should remain dedicated. Commitment is what will help you succeed along with a passion for what you do.

There are quite a few advantages and disadvantages of being a work-at-home parent. It would be best to explore these before you decide that this is a way of life for you.

Advantages

If you are ready to give up the rat race you may want to work at home. You can pursue a talent or passion you enjoy. You no longer have to be under the reins of a boss.

You can also set your own hours and you can arrange your schedule around family or social time. More specifically a parent who may work at home can properly balance child care and paid employment.

It does something for a parent if he or she can find something that is all him or her. Every person needs goals or tasks independent of the need to take care of a family.

Disadvantages

Sometimes a mom or dad’s work takes her/him away from home. If the parent’s work requires a long business trip the family often struggles. They have to ‘hold down the fort’ so to speak in that other parent’s absence.

This is especially hard if the one parent who is on a business trip happens to be the family organizer. Another problem is that when the parent is at home and the children are at home the parent may find it hard to concentrate unless the kids are occupied.

Typical Home Worker

It seems that women who live in traditional two-parent household are the ones who work at home the most. In this case the father is usually the major breadwinner. These women may work part-time but also may work full time.

They may do it for a variety of reasons-one being to earn extra money for her self and the family. She may also do it for the psychological benefits of doing something other than being a full-time home-maker and mother.

She wants to work and have something that is all her and nothing to do with the rest of the family. It helps remind her that she is an individual.

Scheduling

It may take some finagling for a parent to get used to working at home. Usually work time is divided from family or leisure time. A parent may care for their children simultaneously while doing tasks or projects.

However, since it is like a regular job it may be better for the parent to do this while the kids are at school. Sometimes if the significant other is home at the same time, this person can care for the children, or work can sometimes be done while the children are asleep.

A work at home job is one that is usually held a minimum of once per week and is consider to be eventually a primary job. Some people currently work every single day and now make a full time living while working at home.

The following is some updates/reports. It just gives you an idea of what real life work at home activity looks like. It gives you a guide to work with.

Some Reports

Some of the statistics in this section are quite told-from the 1990 census. However, it can give you an idea of how the percentages of people who did work in this capacity increased over the past two decades.

According to 1990 Census reports about 60% of individuals who work at home are not explicitly paid for it. Furthermore of the 40% of people who are compensated for their work at home many of them worked fewer than 8 hours per week.

Only about 14.5% of the people who did work at home worked 35 hours a week or more. Therefore, during these decades this kind of employment was basically considered a part time income.

That is, unless someone actually did make it big. That is, in the event someone actually made it big on one of those scam business opportunities.

However, it should be noted that as far as home businesses are concerned they are not all scams. You can make a very lucrative and steady part time or full time income. You could in the 1990s and you can now.

However, it is a matter of knowing what opportunities you should nail when. It helps if there has been a fair amount of test marketing or research done on opportunities. This would give you a clearer indication of how well you would do if you were to pursue a certain opportunity.

Other Updates

People who work at home are often self-employed and run their own home-based business. It is estimated that more than half of home-based business owners are under-insured.

The independent insurance agents of America (IIAA) say nearly 40% of those they surveyed are uninsured. If a person is insured a typical homeowners policy usually only covers damages up to $2,500, and a homeowner policy will not cover all damages.

For instance, if a delivery person comes to the door it may not cover all accidents. One case in point is the example of the delivery person that slips and falls when delivering a package.

You might wonder if there really is any legit online way or business to make money on the Internet. One case in point is Work at home United. Is this a legitimate way to seek help or is it a scam?

Its Function

The function of Work at Home United is to help people build their own home businesses that allow people to be their own boss and work around their children’s schedules.

Work At Home United is an independent home business owner. They partnered together in mutual respect for the purpose of mentoring others. This was done to help develop home business leaders.

About the Company

Work at Home United is a reputable company that has a solid track record of success. They sell a variety of cleaning products and makeup. They also sell health food, vitamins, and skin care.

They provide a variety of tools for people to use to advance their business. For instance, when you sign up you receive the following:

Personalized websites on which to market products

Professional coaching and mentorship

Team support any time you need it

Informative monthly publications printed

Global marketing potential

A 100% satisfaction guarantee

Brief Evaluation

When you visit the Work at Home United website it does appear that they have quite a system set up. They also seem very ready and willing to help you, as they do have an e-mail support service.

One disadvantage is that there is no contact phone number on some supporting websites. However, you have to sign up apparently to receive information. Be very careful though if they do not allow you to receive any answers to questions before paying.

You will be, however, contacted by a professional and they can give you additional details about the Work at Home United opportunity. This is something you should think about.

If you find yourself feeling a little overwhelmed at times, you should seek out others who may be in the same situation as you. If you work at home you can find and meet people via online forums.

Advantages

Many of the members who are a part of the work at home forum may be a lot more experienced than you. Therefore, they can offer great advice that can help you succeed.

A work at home forum can help you learn about the various money making programs out there. This will help you understand a bit more about what you are getting into.

This is one way that you can decide if it is worth the investment. It is a great place to communicate with and connect with like-minded people. It is a great way to begin steps towards success.

Furthermore, when you join a work at home forum, you will be able to communicate with others who may be feeling the same way that you do. It is always nice to hear that you are not the only one in a specific situation.

You can then bounce ideas off each other to find something that will make you happier about your current position. You will also find that a work at home forum will offer great information.

A work at home forum is also a great place to find advice and leads pointing to lucrative and rewording work. You will also find that many of these forums have a section on scams so you know what kinds of supposed “opportunities” to avoid.

One thing regarding the reporting of scams on work at home forums is that information is often posted on opportunities that are not legitimate. Therefore, you can see as clear as day what advertised ventures and programs you should avoid.

Many work at home forums will also have sections where you yourself can also post job leads for other people. For instance, if you need someone to write website content or someone to manage your business and social networks, at one of these online forums is one place you can do so.

Concerns

If course, when you use a work at home forum, there may be a bit of competitiveness that arises between online members. This is a result of the fact that there are only so many job openings and paid projects to do. However, by and large an online forum can be far more helpful than it can be hurtful.

Work at home benefits are many. For instance, when doing so you can choose your own hours.

Furthermore, working at home provides for the possibility of unlimited income earning. You also have the chance to gain personal freedom, which of course is part financial and part personal.

Along with choosing your own hours this personal freedom comes in the form of increased income. Thus, more of your bills are paid and you are able to achieve more of your dreams.

Additional work at home benefits include the following:

You may finally find the money you need to send your kids to college.

You may be offered lower insurance rate for both your automobile and your home.

You may find special rates for self-employed people for health insurance.

You may be able to take advantage of tax breaks-within reason.

You have the chance to bring in an extra income while keeping your costs down.

You can save money by not having to travel back and forth to your job.

You are awarded the opportunity for greater balance between your personal life and your work.

When emergencies arise you are better available when you work at home.

Your family may appreciate having you around more, especially your children.

Sometimes you have the freedom to take your work with you on vacation.

You are more than likely to able to enjoy what you are doing rather than working some boring job.

Some Drawbacks

There are many benefits to working at home. However, there are also a few drawbacks. For instance, you are not guaranteed a regular salary. You are also not given sick pay or sick leave or any other benefits of a regular employee.

Furthermore, if you want health insurance you have to pay for it yourself. It can be expensive to run a home business too, though it does not have to be.

Quite a few things may compete with your attention when you work at home. Therefore, it can be hard to stay focused, as you feel pulled in so many different directions.

It could be (God and you love ‘em) your noisy children that is distracting you. Maybe your spouse is annoying you. Maybe the TV in the other room is too loud and it draws you to your favorite programs, or maybe you get one call after another from friends.

Whatever the case may be, you need to learn to find a way to remain concentrated on the business at hand. Whether you are taking a customer call, working on a project, or filing paperwork, you may need to learn how to concentrate-as hard as that can be.

Here are some practical work at home focus tips:

Create an environment at your desk that is conducive to productivity. For instance, you should place what you need at your desk and make a place for everything.

Take things out of your work area that could potentially distract you. For instance, maybe you have certain craft hobbies or video games you like. You may even need to have a separate computer for work in a separate location of the home.

Exit out of all your instant messenger programs when finishing a project that has a rapidly approaching due date. Just remember to check your instant messages once or twice a day in case a client wants to talk to you.

If you need noise to work, one option would be to choose an Internet radio station or to have a CD or MP3 player running in the background. It is better than having the TV on.

Put your cell phone on silent so you can get your personal calls. However, do not answer them during the work day if at all possible.

Stay away from your personal e-mails. Make sure you do not check them until after you have done the work you did for the day.

Schedule free time with your children during the day for maybe an hour or two at a time is helpful. This will help them not feel neglected (and help you not feel so guilty). Yet, you still have the rest of the time to do your work.

Set yourself some “work hours.” Now, you do not necessarily have to make it 9 to 5. Whatever works for you is fine. However, try to remain consistent. Always do your work during specific times.

Some more Thoughts

In the early stage of a business where you’re working at home, you have to develop the habit and discipline to stay consistent and not slack off. Often you have to work harder than people who have a structured job in the beginning.

However, in time you may have more and more freedom. Eventually, you may be able to afford to hire other people to do some of your work for you. At the same time, you would still make money.

However, for now when you work at home you need to temporarily “put your nose to the grindstone” so to speak. This is so you can prepare for a brighter future and a better quality of life.

If you work at home you probably enjoy a fair amount of freedoms. There is for one the luxury of setting your own schedule as you see fit.

However, working at home also has its frustrations. Common frustrations that you encounter when you work at home include the following:

One of the major problems with working at home is that most people think that it means you aren’t working. There is this stigma that working at home means that you do not even have a real job.

The income you have is not always predictable. The exception would be is if you are hired on by a company directly to complete projects at home. At least then you are on a company payroll.

Another major drawback to working at home if you are a parent is if you have children. You may think you have more time when you work at home but you really do not. You still have to get your work done and still have to make time for your kids.

It can be tough to remain organized. It is had to be productive with a messy desk. The same applies to if you do not even have a calendar. You can lose profit if you do not schedule your appointments so you can remember.

It can be easy to become “duped” by work at home scams. In this case you have wasted your money instead of making money.

Sometimes if you have an online business it can be hard. You would run it from your home but sometimes your privacy and security can be compromised.

Some Insight

It may seem like with all the frustrations related to working at home that it is not worth it. However, working at home does have many rewards.

It is just that you cannot blindly enter this lifestyle without knowing what is involved. It is not always the dream lifestyle you thought it would be. After all, it’s not called “play at home” is it?

Of course, you should never give up your dream of making millions of dollars. Just do not let anyone fool you into thinking it is going to happen tomorrow, next week, or even next year.

It could take years and years for you to finally “make it big.” In the time being, the best thing to do is continue working hard and be content with where you are at.

Perhaps one of the first financial goals you should have is to bring in enough revenue that you earn a comfortable living. Then, you can let go of your job. You should also set up a calendar, and if you have to send yourself audible reminders.
