Why work at home anyway?

These and other statements of the benefits of working at home are everywhere you look nowadays, but do they hold water? Why would anyone want to make their home, once a place of sanctuary, the center of the hustle and bustle of your work day? The answer is quite simple, freedom.

Whether it is a higher income, or more time doing the things you like, or just fewer hours working, working at home is usually a choice of freedom over control by others. Without a boss you are free to work when you want, take on only the amount of work you want to, and don't have to listen to the weekly lecture about Friday being the only day of the week jeans are allowed.

While this is the number one reason most people choose to get a work at home career, it is also the same reason a majority of businesses fail, lack of control. If there is no boss around, there is no job to lose if you hit the snooze button one more time, or decide not to take that extra contract. The same freedom that a person runs toward to become a work at home business owner carries the responsibility that if avoided also, will be the end of their business. If you hate the structure that you left behind, but make no attempt to find a proper structural setting for your own business that you can live with, then you are left with two choices:

Swallow the fact that structure and responsibility are actually what you were running away from, and not toward freedom, and hire management, or go back to your 9 to 5. If you are unable to keep your business on track by yourself, then you should face this fact and find someone who can.

Fail and be unemployed and broke.

If you are not realistic about your liabilities and assets, then you will not be able to be realistically gauge your successes and where you need to place more emphasis. Research and development are dependant on these two factors and can not be done without them. No business can survive for very long without valid information.

Do not fail to be responsible and structure your professional life, or you will be responsible for your work at home business failure. Not even in the name of freedom.
